Darvocet, Darvocet-N (Propoxyphene + Acetaminophen)

Darvocet is a narcotic, mu-opioid agonist that is prescribed in treating mild and moderate pains. It is a generic medication available under different brand names consisting varying combinations of Propoxyphene and Acetaminophen. Propoxyphene is a centrally acting opiate analgesic while Acetaminophen is a non-opiate non-salicylate analgesic and antipyretic. Both these compounds when used together provide a higher amount of pain relief than when used on their own.

Darvocet-N 100 contains 100mg Propoxyphene Napsylate and 650mg Acetaminophen. Similarly Darvocet is available in combination of Propoxyphene HCL 32.5mg + Acetaminophen 500mg as well as Dextropropoxyphene HCL 65mg + Acetaminophen 400mg. Napsylate salt is lately used instead of HCL as it is not soluble in liquid and hence not prone to abuse.

Used in the treatment of mild and moderate pains, Darvocet is a prescription medication to be taken under Doctor’s advice. Actual dosage is determined on the patient’s condition, age, physical make-up and reaction to the medication. Generally physicians may prescribe one dosage every four hours. Doctors may assess patient’s condition regularly and modify dosage depending on the patient’s response.

Darvocet, Darvocet-N Drug Interactions & Contraindications

Darvocet is contraindicated in patients who have undesirable reactions to propoxyphene or acetaminophen; patients with asthma or disorders that cause respiratory problems and patients that may have interrupted bowels or paralyticileus. CNS depressant intake with Darvocet has potential of fatalities and hence concomitant use is strictly avoided. Also patients who require sleep-inducing medications, muscle relaxants, antidepressants should avoid Darvocet.

Darvocet, Darvocet-N Overdose & Missed Dose

Immediately inform the doctor / local poison control center (1-800-222-1222 for US patients) in case of overdose emergency. Dial 911 for other extreme emergencies.

Do not increase dosage to compensate for missed doses. Take the dose as soon as user realizes that the dose has been missed (unless there is very less time between the next one in which case just take one dose).
